The Confession Nobody Wants to Make
"I can't go live because I'm not tech-savvy."
Have you ever said that? I have. More times than I'd like to admit.
For years, I watched other women show up confidently on camera while I convinced myself that I needed more training, better equipment, and perfect conditions before I could press that "Go Live" button.
Technology felt like an insurmountable wall standing between my purpose and my visibility. I was hiding behind the excuse of "not being ready," when really, I was just afraid. If you've ever felt this way, I want you to know something important: You are not alone.

My $500 Microphone Disaster (And Why I'm Grateful for It)
Let me take you back to my first livestream attempt.
I had done everything "right." I invested in an expensive microphone—we're talking serious money here. I researched tutorials. I set up my space. I prepared my talking points. I took a deep breath and confidently hit "Go Live."
And then... nothing.
Well, not nothing exactly. My mouth was moving. My hands were gesturing. I was delivering what I thought was an inspiring message.
But there was zero sound.
My phone started ringing. And ringing. And ringing. People were desperately trying to tell me they couldn't hear a single word I was saying. I was essentially performing a silent film for confused viewers who had no idea what I was trying to communicate.
Talk about embarrassing.
I wanted to crawl under my desk and never come out. I wanted to quit before I really even started. The voice in my head screamed, "See? You're not tech-savvy enough for this. You're not ready."
But here's what happened instead: I came right back out there and did it all over again.
And guess what? The second time, my mic was working.
That disaster became one of the most valuable lessons of my journey: Perfection isn't the goal. Progress is.
The Myth That's Keeping You Silent
Somewhere along the way, we've all bought into a dangerous myth:
"You need expensive equipment, studio lighting, professional training, and flawless execution to successfully share your message online."
This belief has kept countless voices silent. It's kept brilliant ideas locked away. It's prevented women with powerful messages from reaching the people who desperately need to hear them.
So let me burst this myth wide open for you:
You don't need an expensive camera. You don't need studio-quality lighting. You don't need perfect tech skills.
What you need is:
Your phone or computer (that's it)
A window with natural light (or a basic lamp)
The courage to press "Go Live"
A message that matters to you
That's the complete list.
The truth that nobody tells you? Authenticity attracts more powerfully than perfection ever could.
What's Really Holding You Back (Hint: It's Not the Technology)
When I work with women who say they can't go live because of technology, we dig a little deeper. And here's what we usually find underneath:
The Fear of Looking Unprofessional
You're worried that without expensive equipment, people won't take you seriously. But here's the reality: Your audience cares more about your message and authenticity than your camera quality.
The Fear of What People Will Think
You imagine critics laughing at your mistakes or judging your setup. But the people who criticize aren't doing anything themselves. The ones who matter—the ones your message is meant for—are cheering you on.
The Fear of Not Being Ready
You convince yourself you need one more course, one more piece of equipment, one more practice session. But "ready" is a moving target that never arrives. You become ready by doing.
The Fear That Your Message Doesn't Matter
This is the deepest fear of all. What if you show up and nobody cares? What if your voice doesn't make a difference?
Let me tell you something crucial: Your voice isn't for everybody, but it IS for somebody.
If just one person is encouraged, inspired, or empowered by what you share, that's enough. That's more than enough. That's everything.
The Tech Without Tears System: 3 Simple Steps to Go Live with Confidence
After that disastrous first livestream and countless successful ones since, I've developed a simple system that removes the overwhelm and replaces it with confidence.
I call it the Tech Without Tears System, and it consists of just three steps:
Step 1: Keep It Simple
Stop overthinking your setup. Here's what you actually need:
Camera: Use the one already on your phone or computer. That's it. No upgrades necessary.
Microphone: The built-in mic on your device works just fine. (Learn from my expensive mistake!)
Lighting: Position yourself near a window during the day for natural light, or use a basic lamp in the evening.
Voice: Your natural voice is enough. Don't try to sound like someone else. Your authenticity is your superpower.
Start with what you have. You can always invest in enhancement equipment later, but don't let the lack of fancy gear delay your start.
Step 2: Test Before You Go Live
This is the step that would have saved me from my silent film debut.
Before you press that "Go Live" button, do a 30-second private test:
Check your sound: Record yourself speaking and play it back. Can you hear yourself clearly?
Check your lighting: Are you visible? Is your face well-lit, not shadowy?
Check your camera angle: Is your face centered? Are you at eye level with the camera?
This simple 30-second routine will calm your nervousness and catch technical issues before your audience sees them.
Step 3: Create a Mini Checklist
Don't wing it. Even a simple outline makes a world of difference.
Create a three-step prep routine:
Test mic and camera (Step 2 above)
Adjust your lighting and background
Outline your message (3-5 key points you want to cover)
Write this down. Keep it by your computer. This checklist will give you confidence because you'll know exactly what to do every single time.
You'll be amazed at how much more relaxed you feel when you have a simple system to follow.
