Why You Can't Focus — And What to Do About It

By Dr. Valarie Harris | Stepping Out with Purpose

You sat down to work. You had the time, you had the intention, and somehow, an hour passed and almost nothing got done. Sound familiar?

Before you blame your schedule, your environment, or your circumstances, I need you to hear this: the real reason you can't focus has nothing to do with how busy you are. It has everything to do with what you haven't yet decided to become intentional about.

Focus is not a personality trait reserved for a select few. It is a discipline, and like every discipline worth developing, it takes practice.

That's the message I brought to my Stepping Up & Stepping Out series, and I'm bringing it to you today. Because if you are going to walk boldly in your purpose, you cannot afford to stay scattered. The world needs what you carry, but it will never receive it if you are too distracted to deliver it.

What Laser Focus Actually Means

Laser focus is not about being intense or rigid. It is the capacity to give 100% of your time and attention to one task, at that moment, for that season, without allowing distractions to dilute your output. Whether you're working on a ministry project, a business plan, a book, or a family goal, your undivided concentration is the ingredient that takes good work and makes it excellent.

It sounds simple. But if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. So let's talk about how to actually build it.

Step 1: Seek God First

Before you open your laptop, pick up your pen, or start your next task, go to God in prayer. Ask Him for direction, clarity, and the grace to stay focused on what He's assigned to you in this season. This is not a ritual. It is a strategic act of alignment.

Proverbs 5:1–2 tells us: "My son, stay focused; listen to the wisdom I've gained. Give attention to what I have learned about life, so that you may be able to make sensible judgments and speak with knowledge."

When you invite God into your focus, you invite divine order into your process. Fewer distractions. Greater clarity. More intentional momentum.

Step 2: Discover and Activate Your Hidden Potential

Here is something I want you to sit with: the reason some of you are struggling to focus is not a time problem, it's a potential problem. You have gifts, ideas, and callings that have been lying dormant inside you, and your lack of laser focus is one of the primary reasons they haven't surfaced yet.

Hidden potential does not come forth on its own. It requires intentionality. You have to make the conscious, deliberate decision to stop sleeping on what God placed inside you. Ask yourself: What have I been putting off that I know I'm called to do? That answer is your invitation.

Step 3: Eliminate Procrastination

Procrastination is not a minor inconvenience. It is a thief. When you procrastinate, you surrender time that could have been used to build, create, serve, and advance. You miss deadlines, promotions, and divine appointments. You hand over the season God designed for your breakthrough.

The enemy loves procrastination because it looks harmless, but it costs you everything. Decide today that delay is no longer an option for someone carrying what you carry.

Step 4: Stretch Beyond Your Comfort Zone

Staying stuck in what's familiar will not produce what's possible. If you want to be laser-focused, you have to be willing to reach, by faith, toward the very thing that feels uncomfortable. Stretching is not optional for a woman called to lead. It is the pathway to every hidden potential waiting to be unlocked.

Build the Foundation Daily

Laser focus is also built through daily habits that most people overlook: getting adequate rest, eating well, nurturing your mindset, taking intentional breaks, exercising, and staying hydrated. These are not luxuries. They are the infrastructure that allows you to show up focused, sharp, and ready.

You were not created to be scattered. You were created to be significant — and significance requires focus.

Start practicing today.
